| One of many shops in a nearby arcade (remains of an old caravanserai) selling knockoffs of designer brands. They were, unfortunately, doing a brisk business. |
After a 2.5-hour walking tour with our guide, we were free
after lunch. I just wandered in the Old
Market, looking at jewelry (didn’t buy any more), interesting souvenirs and
people-watching. I’m finding on this
trip that I enjoy balancing the structure of guided tours and someone to answer
my questions with being able to just walk around and soak up the atmosphere.

| I had to see this spot- it's where Gavrilo Princip stood as he assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. |

In the evening we listened to a man in his early 40s who told us about his experience in the Balkan war, as an ethnic Serb living in Bosnia. He'd been attending school with friends from a multitude of ethnic groups (Bosnia, Serbian, Muslim) and suddenly learned that some were The Enemy. I've read a lot about the history of the Balkans (and I'm still not done) and the two main lessons are that it's VERY complicated and that views of the war depend heavily in someone's location and their ethnic group. We were there mostly to listen. When I told our guide it would have been interesting to include Serbia in our itinerary she said that they had done that before but guides from the other republics had a very hard time listening to the Serbs' view of the war.
